Negative Thought Cycles - Rumination

Let’s talk… RUMINATION. 😵‍💫 Rumination is often defined as a pattern of thinking in which you repeat thoughts or thought cycles, often negatively impacting functioning. Rumination can feel like you’re trapped on a hamster wheel, unable to escape your own mind.

“The tricky thing about rumination is that it feels like it’s helpful, but there is no action taken, and you don’t move forward to some sort of solution.”

WAYS TO ADDRESS RUMINATION

-Journal: Write it out to get it out.

- Look at your thoughts objectively. Removing the judgment or shame from your thoughts can help you better address them.

- Question/challenge your thoughts. Ask yourself, “Can I control this?” Or “Can I change this?” Recognize where you may have control and where you may not. Are your thoughts based in reality?

-Talk to someone you trust.

-Find a healthy distraction from your thoughts. Break free from the cycle and consciously choose to do something else.

-Take action. What is something you can do in 5 minutes to address your worries?
